Hearing Associates recently helped address the food insecurity issue in the community by donating funds to Share Life’s Kids’ Café Summer Lunch Program.
A portion of all hearing aid sales and $20 for every free screening completed in September was donated to this program operated by Share Life in Clear Lake, Iowa. Kids’ Café aims to provide stability and food security to children during summer vacation and breaks in the winter and summer.
For 10 weeks this past summer, a weekly food box delivery was made to the homes of 90 children to help ensure they got proper nutrition while on break from school. Families qualify for Kids’ Café through their enrollment in the public school system’s free and reduced lunch program.
The lunch program used a total of $16,000 for the summer, with the budget based on spending $3.50/meal per child. All of the funds allocated for Kids’ Café are used for food and supplies to operate the program, which is supported by volunteers.
Share Life began in 2015 when a group of friends organized a free summer lunch program in Clear Lake. As they brainstormed and collaborated with others, they realized there was a need that extended beyond free lunches. The non-profit organization now partners with individuals and agencies to provide resources for the most vulnerable and isolated members of the community. Share Life attempts to serve these individuals through mentoring, advocacy, outreach and active inclusion in community life.
