The holiday season is a time to get together with family and friends, share stories and enjoy a good meal. For those experiencing hearing loss, however, these large gatherings are often more stressful than joyful.
If you have a loved one who is experiencing hearing loss, here are some ways to make the holidays a little more enjoyable for them.
Be Attentive. Many with hearing loss avoid social settings due to communication issues. If you notice a family member eluding conversations, walk up and try to start a conversation. It’s also helpful to help translate information the person is talking with children (especially ones younger than five).
Encourage other guests to speak clearly and face-to-face. Even with hearing aids, conversations can still be challenging if there’s background noise. Standing face-to-face, in a well-lit room, and speaking clearly can decrease communication breakdowns.
Watch the Seating Chart. Avoid having the person with hearing loss sit near noisy areas such as the kitchen. Competing with the background noise will cause challenges in conversations during the family meal.
Cut Out Background Noise. Some background noise – such as children laughing and people cooking in the kitchen – is unavoidable. But other noise can easily be reduced or eliminated. Turning down the music and TV are easy changes to make. If the kids are making too much noise with their new toys, move your conversation to another room.
